How can a 100% Hungarian-owned company, initially primarily engaged in office design and interior design, become the most complex construction services group in Hungary in 30 years, with an annual turnover of over HUF 40 billion? The DVM group’s three-decade history is characterised by organic development and continuous growth in response to market needs. Profitable since its foundation, the company’s work processes are driven by a commitment to quality, an integrated approach and diversified engineering expertise. They are major players in the commercial real estate development, hotel and office markets, as well as in the construction of residential, industrial and power plants. Their team of engineers currently has some 28 construction and over 60 design assignments.

DVM was founded by Attila Kovács in 1995 as a design agency to provide Western European quality service to the then emerging domestic office market. The concept, which was almost unknown in Hungary at that time and based on Anglo-Saxon traditions, was based on an integrated approach and process coordination, which allowed for the complete management of a given project, including design, construction and supervision. This approach not only characterised their early interior design work, but also continues to define their work today in office, hotel, residential and industrial developments. It also allows for faster and more cost-effective delivery and reduces developer risk – especially in historic environments or for complex projects. “Despite the expansion of our scope of activities, our original commitment to quality, precision and attention to detail remains unchanged. Maintaining these standards is a major challenge, as strengthening the foundations, restoring the façade or upgrading the mechanical systems of a listed building requires a completely different professional focus than the perfection of luxury interiors in the same building. At DVM, these are the responsibility of separate disciplines, but the end result must always be of uncompromisingly high quality – for the building as a whole,” adds Péter Haberl, managing partner of the group.

DVM has always wanted to stand out for its quality buildings and work, and has projects in several European countries, currently working in France, Bulgaria and Germany. “Most of our work is in Hungary, but we also carry out design or project management assignments abroad almost every year. Many of our clients are international companies for whom we have worked in other countries on several occasions. This is a line we would naturally like to develop further, and we are currently engaged in promising negotiations,” emphasises Balázs Czár, managing partner of DVM group. They have continuously expanded their range of services to meet the needs of their clients: they now offer a full design & build service, with their own design, project management, construction and environmental consultancy teams. In 2024, DVM-Greenfield was established, offering a full range of services in the industrial real estate sector, from turnkey general construction of sustainable warehouses and production halls, to project management and comprehensive professional consultancy. The initial team of four designers has now grown into an organisation of more than one hundred and fifty people, mostly highly qualified engineers, and annual turnover has increased tenfold since 2004, to exceed HUF 40 billion in 2024. The group’s management model is also special, with the managing partners – Tibor Massányi, Péter Haberl and Balázs Czár – also being owners, thanks to the unique approach of the late founder. “I always thought that if I take someone on board, I offer them an ownership stake”, said Attila Kovács in 2017.

Over three decades, 1.5 million m2 of construction and design has been associated with the DVM group. They have designed and executed for iconic luxury brands such as Armani, Burberry, Jaguar, worked for Huawei, Wizz Air and the American and Canadian Embassies. The pride of its integrated construction and architectural services include Deloitte, the headquarters of British Petrol (bp), one of the largest office developments on the inner Váci út, Promenade Gardens and the Szervita Square Buildings. Many of their projects are characterised by their reconstruction in accordance with strict historic preservation criteria, such as the urban and sustainability-oriented redevelopment of the Eiffel Palace, the Art Nouveau Váci1 office building, the renovation of the Ballet Institute building, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the five-star W Budapest Hotel. The Attila 99 Loft, a building designed by architect Dénes Györgyi, was also renovated to preserve its original character. Several iconic general construction projects are currently underway with the DVM group: the St. Regis Hotel in Klotild Palace, the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Gellért, or the 632-apartment Duna Terrace Vista residential complex at Foka Bay. They are also involved in the complete renewal of the Hungaroring and the construction of projects for Nilfisk, Morgan Stanley, Wise offices and the Saint James private clinic. Their self-development residential project Andor Liget is currently under construction.

“I don’t think the future of DVM lies in conquering new sectors. Rather, I believe we need to refine and develop our existing design and construction services. We need to improve our day-to-day processes, improve the smoothness of teamwork, develop more efficient working methods and plan and implement our projects more consciously. We need to pay even more attention to environmental awareness and recognise the responsibility we have to shape our environment,” says Tibor Massányi, Managing Partner of DVM group. DVM group is therefore also preparing for the challenges of the future: it is committed to ESG and sustainability, its internal expert teams have been applying green certifications for more than 10 years and it has established two solar parks in Hungary, which aim to strengthen its environmentally conscious operations and consciously diversify its portfolio towards a sector that is sustainable in the long term and provides a stable economic footing for the group. The company’s engineering diversification, international experience and adaptive operations ensure that it will continue to grow steadily despite the current market uncertainties.
