STEAM Budapest

A new cult spot in the centre of Budapest, waiting from morning till late at night for those who live the city life naturally. The owners of the restaurant have imagined a café atmosphere tailored to today’s needs, where cosiness, friends and business meetings play the leading role, with a cosmopolitan feel.

Just as the Szervita Square Building is the jewel in DVM’s portfolio, which has won numerous international awards, the STEAM restaurant is the jewel in the crown of Budapest’s restaurant scene. The modern building blends organically into the architectural environment defined by the famous Art Nouveau buildings. It is unique because of its characteristics: a particular design, a light, ethereal structure, soft facade contours and reflective surfaces all come together in a harmonious whole.

At first glance, the building’s imposing, awe-inspiring dimensions may not even be apparent: 6 floors, a lobby ground floor and a 5-storey underground car park. The six-storey glass facade, divided by decorative louvres, resembles a cloud, with a variety of undulations emerging from its contours. The space surrounding the building is arranged in a terraced layout, where the glass facade of the building carries all the houses of the Szervita square as a kind of memory.

The interior of STEAM reflects this memory, evoking the atmosphere of the forgotten cafés of the area and combining the modern Art Nouveau ambience of the building.

A new cult spot in the centre of Budapest, waiting from morning till late at night for those who live the city life naturally. The owners of the restaurant have imagined a café atmosphere tailored to today’s needs, where cosiness, friends and business meetings play the leading role, with a cosmopolitan feel.

They offer primarily bistro style meals, following the explosive gastronomic changes of recent years, while preserving the traditional character of each dish – fresh, new, sophisticated, with quality ingredients and eye-catching presentation.

The interior design language and the use of materials in the space suggest simplicity, high quality, a relaxed feel and perfect harmony of detail. The designers have played with Art Nouveau and Art Deco influences, massing and curved shapes. In STEAM, Art Nouveau (terracotta masses, patterned cushions, Thonet shapes on the terrace chairs) and Art Deco (marble table inserts, walnut, copper accessories) meet with an industrial influence in the industrial ceiling and minimalist wood elements.

The darkened brown glass block of the counter and display kitchen, with the gallery level at the top, appears as a subtle mass in the space. While at the bottom these features are clad in rolled copper, at the top the gallery space is defined by a more transparent copper partition of the same material. The interior’s characterful copper, terracotta and walnut tones were selected to create a sense of homeliness. In the downstairs guest area, the seating is island-like, with custom-designed velvet terracotta sofas for comfort and plants for separation. Edison bulbs from the playfully suspended bubble lamps in the guest space provide a pleasant accompaniment to the evening ambience.
